AmeriCorps NCCC

There isn’t anything quite like AmeriCorps NCCC for young Americans. The mission of AmeriCorps NCCC is to strengthen communities and develop leaders through direct team-based national and community service. In teams of 11, 18-24 year olds spend 10 months on the road living in diverse cities and spending lots of time on the open road traveling from service site to service site. In New Orleans, AmeriCorps NCCC has been integral to the capacity building of several rebuilding organizations and has upwards of 200 Corps members in the Greater New Orleans region at a time. During Hurricane Gustav, NCCC partnered with the Office of Emergency Preparedness to provide 18 corps members who registered evacuees over the phone as well as embedded themselves with the American Red Cross on site at the Union Passenger terminal. Disaster services are not only a focus but a specialty of AmeriCorps NCCC; the structure and operations of the program allow for quick action both before and after a disaster. Partnering with evacuteer.org is a natural fit as evacuteer.org brings together volunteers to prepare and respond to the needs of a community in its most urgent time.
